Instructions on making a moonshine whiskey still at home

Moonshine whiskey still making is fairly easy if you follow the instructions step by step. If you have the ingredients and the equipment, you will find brewing your own moonshine very easy and convenient not to say – cheap! However it is prudent and wise to first find out if you are breaking the law by distilling the alcohol at home.

The moonshine recipe is very easy. Mix the molasses and yeast with water and allow this mixture to go through the fermentation process till it is a cauldron bubbling with high powered alcohol. Building the moonshine still at home is not illegal but distilling alcohol is! You will have to understand the distillation process before you begin. Distillation means taking the chemical mixture and heating it to a point where the chemical compounds are left behind while the lowest atoms at boiling point leave. This method is used to make brandy from wine and whiskey from beer. Therefore all the still does is separate the liquid into 2 completely different compounds.

You will need the following to make your moonshine still:
A large pot that can hold a gallon of liquid, a round bottomed bowl, a drinking glass (8 oz), a magnet, a weight (like a brick) to keep the round-bottomed bowl in place, cooking thermometer to measure temperature, ½ gallon red wine, ice cubes and a hydrometer.

Place your pot on the stove and pour in the red wine(2 quarts). Place the 8 oz collection glass in the middle of the pot and put the magnet in the glass to hold it down. Heat the ingredients and wait till temperature reaches 120F. Keep checking your thermometer so that you get the heat just right. Once it reaches the required temperature, turn down the flame of the stove to a low temperature and make sure you control the heat carefully from now on.

Fill the round-bottomed bowl with ice cubes and put this bowl on top of the pot. The bowl should be sealed well over the pot. The best results will be got if the seal is good. Add the weight or brick to the round bottomed bowl so that the seal traps the vapor better. Slowly let the temperature rise during the next thirty minutes. As the alcohol heats chemical compounds will begin to boil at varying temperatures. Methyl alcohol will be the first one to evaporate while ethyl alcohol and water will evaporate and boil at their respective temperatures. Soon the alcohol will turn into spirit/vapor when it reaches boiling point. As these vapors hit the bowl on top that has ice cubes, they will condense and slowly the liquor will start to drip into the storage/collection glass.

Moonshine whiskey still making depends on how well you monitor the whole process of moonshine making. The right temperatures should be maintained. The wine should not boil. As soon as the water is at 212F shut down the heat and take away the collection glass. You should get rid of the wine. Many novices get above 20% alcohol and with time and practice can manage to get 40% alcohol.

What is a micro distillery

Micro distillery is a name that is given to a small “boutique” like distillery. This term is often used in the USA, but one can find many such small distilleries in and around Europe for years. These distilleries are known as cognac distilleries or single malt whiskey distilleries that sell their single malt brands. Today countries like Switzerland and London have seen the development of the micro-distillery.

New micro-distilleries produce just spirits. The vodka is one of the popular spirits that are seasonally flavored. Plenty of micro distilleries for vodka and gin have emerged in the UK as well as the States. Small distilleries like these produced many exotic brands of spirits that are marketed and designed in such a way that they resembled high class restaurants rather than just alcohol marketing establishments. From these micro-distilleries, the new celebrity distiller emerged and has become extremely popular.

A micro distillery can sell “hand crafted whiskey” that has a distinct and particular flavor. Many folk have started their own distilling by running micro distilleries that create unique and special gourmet spirits that include vodka, whiskey, rum etc. This trend has literally “exploded” across the country and many “gourmet-foodies” have started making their own wine and beer at home because people have found out that it is not illegal and they can easily micro-distill spirits. Most of these micro-distilleries are on farms and the fruits/vegetables that are locally grown are used. Companies that produce less than 10,000 gallons of the spirit are considered micro-distilleries. Gins and different vodkas are infused with wild berries, pumpkin and oranges.

It is a known fact that micro-distilled liquors and spirits are a wonderful business opportunity. This movement is expanding as more and more entrepreneurs have realized that they can follow in the footsteps of successful micro-distillers who have really made a huge success. You will have to have more than just enthusiasm for distilling spirits – you will need know-how as well as money to get into the micro-distillery business. Many successful distillers focus on a particular single “special” product while others opt for variety. While some see themselves as manufacturers of the spirit with no thought of marketing, others see themselves as suppliers of these spirits.

Micro distillery entrepreneurs find that they have to really do a lot of ground work before getting into the business. The best way to go about having your own micro-distillery is to have a plan that details all expected financial expenses as well as the projected income. This plan should also outline as to how you are going to operate the micro-distillery. This plan will have to be submitted to your bank or to any possible investor in order to get you a loan. Your business strategy will have to be figured out and you will have to make up your mind whether you will focus on a variety of spirits or a particular spirit, its quality etc. A lot of money will have to be invested before you can start operating the micro distillery and start earning the money you spent back! Initial costs will be almost $10,000 or more.

How to make your own moonshine at home

Make your own moonshine and you can be sure of enjoying your own alcohol with a distinctive flavor. However it is not that easy to produce your own moonshine. In fact it is an art that takes a lot of your time and one has to practice before coming up with an excellent batch of moonshine that can sell. Right through history, people have used various methods of making moonshine at home. Special ingredients and methods have been used in order to get a particular taste.

Many bootleggers and moonshiners have used code words when they talk about making moonshine at home. This is obviously because they wanted to be secretive about it and avoid the law. This is because a bootlegger was someone who sold illegal whiskey and the person who made the liquor illegally was the moonshiner. Moonshine is also known as corn liquor, sugar whiskey, tiger’s sweat, white lightening, popskull, alley bourbon, skull cracker, panther’s breath, city gin, happy sally, blue john, ruckus juice, mule kick etc.

Make your own moonshine by using the basic ingredients that are sugar, corn meal, water, yeast and malt. These ingredients should be mixed in a big container. This mixture is called “mash”. Move the mash into a still for fermentation. The warmth of this mixture will determine the time of fermentation. Heat it till it is at 173 degrees. A clear dark liquid will be produced. Attention should be given to the process at this point.

Using a coil or tube, trap the vapor which should be transferred into another container. The condensation of this vapor is moonshine which is ready to be sold or drunk. The remaining mash or “slop” in the container can be used again to produce more moonshine after adding water, sugar, malt and corn meal to it. This process can be repeated 8 times before changing the mash.

Make your own moonshine by using a DIY approach. It is extremely important to first check the national, federal, state and local statutes so that you will not be breaking any law by building your own moonshine still in order to make your drink. Most of the states in the country prohibit the making of alcohol that exceed specific proofs therefore stay within the laws and you won’t get into any trouble.

Make your own moonshine still by using the following: An old steamer with a lid or a crock pot; copper tube that is about five feet long, some carpentry tools, big milk bottle (plastic) with lid, storage container, some waterproof sealant, coffee filters, charcoal and a good moonshine recipe.

Drill the crock pot lid and feed an end of the copper tube into it. Fasten the lid to the large milk bottle and make a large hole into which you can feed ice through into the container. Make a hole in the bottle lid and feed the tube into it and out from the side around 2 inches away from the bottom. Make sure that the end of the tube goes into the storage container in which you want to store the homemade liquor you brew. Fill in the gaps where the tube goes into the lids with waterproof sealant. Fill the pot with the ingredients and around two thirds of the bottle with ice. Cook the mixture at a temperature of around 175 to 200 F.

Make your own moonshine by monitoring the distilling process carefully and adding ice cubes to the bottle throughout the process so that there is no melting of the plastic. Sample your own moonshine every now and then.

How to make a moonshine still at home

How to make a moonshine still is what most people who are interested in making their own liquor are curious about. There are two types of moonshine stills that can be used for distillation of moonshine at home. These are the Reflux still and the Pot Still. These are pretty simple to make as well as to operate.

The Pot still is made up of two components which are the Condenser and the Pot. The pot is a container used to heat the brew and the condenser is used for converting the vaports or escaping spirits into liquid. All you need is an old pressure cooker (aluminum or stainless steel) which has a capacity of 1 gallon. This should have a lid that fits tightly. To make the condenser you should have copper tubing that is 10 mm diameter and wind it over something like a broom shank that is wrapped tightly with newspapers and tape to get the desired size, so that it forms a coil. Next you would have to plug one end of the tube and fill the tube with ordinary salt with the help of a funnel. When this is done seal the other end so that the tube does not collapse when you bend it. This will make it easy for you to wrap it around the broom shank. After the coil is formed saw off or unplug the ends and take all the salt out. The cooler you keep the coil, the more efficiently the condenser will work.

Take a bucket and drill a hole in its side and pass the coil (bottom end) though it. The other (top) end of the tube should be an inch under the bucket top. Fit the coil so that the bottom tube end sticks out of the hole and then seal the opening and gaps with a waterproof sealant. Make sure that there is an opening on the pot lid so that the vapors can escape. Once you do this fix a meter of plastic tubing over the opening so that these vapors are caught and can be transferred into the coil in the condenser.

If you want to build your own moonshine still at home then you should know that it may not be a legal thing to do in the first place. This is because there are many laws passed that restrict the production of moonshine at home. However there is nothing illegal about actually building a moonshine still in many places you could still be breaking the law. If you visit your local library or go online you will find a lot of information and instructions as to how to make a moonshine still at home.

How to make a moonshine still is what you get in books and online sites that take you step-by-step though all the procedures that are involved in producing different types of spirit alcohols.
